On the morning of May 18, 2024, the graduate session of the "Chinese-Style Modernization and the Innovative Development of Marxist Philosophy" academic symposium was successfully held in Conference Room 1600 of the Huiwen Building at the Yuehai Campus. This academic symposium was hosted by the Department of Social Sciences at Shenzhen University, the School of Marxism at Shenzhen University, the Regional Collaborative Innovation Center for Ideological and Political Courses in Guangdong Universities, the Institute for Ecological Civilization and Green Development at Shenzhen University, the research team of the National Social Science Fund Major Project "Research on Xi Jinping’s Thought on Ecological Civilization," and the Institute for Contemporary Chinese Thought and Culture.

The graduate session was divided into four parts, with 17 graduate students from Shenzhen University and Jinan University presenting their papers. Six faculty members from the School of Marxism, including Liu Haijuan, Luo Jing, Liao Chen, Cai Zhuo, Li Yingxia, and Yin Wengui, served as expert reviewers for on-site evaluations. The session was chaired by Professor Liao Chen from the School of Marxism.

In the first session, the students presented their perspectives on topics such as the people-oriented nature of Chinese-style modernization, strengthening the awareness of the Chinese national community, world socialism, and the modernity thought in The Communist Manifesto. The main reviewers for this session were Professors Liu Haijuan and Luo Jing. Professor Liu Haijuan emphasized that academic writing should be guided by a clear problem awareness, where the problem is specific, targeted, and closely related to the research subject. She also stressed the importance of addressing real-world issues by focusing on core problems and paying attention to theoretical, methodological, and applied innovations, while considering societal relevance. Professor Luo Jing provided detailed guidance on practical aspects of academic writing, including writing norms, title selection, and citation formats. She emphasized the importance of clear and scholarly expression, encouraging students to build strong foundational skills in paper formatting and to pay attention to the details in their writing.

In the second session, students presented their analyses from various angles, such as the concept of civilization, Marxist dialectical thinking, the view of capital in Chinese-style modernization, and Marx's theory of money alienation. The main reviewers for this session were Professors Cai Zhuo and Yin Wengui. Professor Cai Zhuo emphasized that the literature review is a key step in academic research. It is not only about summarizing previous studies but also crucial for identifying research questions, establishing the value of the research, and positioning one's study within the field. A well-executed literature review should be comprehensive, systematic, and critical, clearly presenting the current state, trends, and challenges in the research field, thereby providing strong support and guidance for future research. Professor Yin Wengui commented on the students’ papers from the perspective of academic rigor and logical coherence. He also addressed the issue of updating references, advising students to stay informed about the latest research findings and ensure that their citations are both current and authoritative.

In the third session, students presented on topics such as common prosperity in people’s spiritual lives, the education of ideals and beliefs for Communists, educational modernization in the new era, and health priorities in Chinese-style modernization. The main reviewers for this session were Professors Liao Chen and Li Yingxia. Professor Liao Chen focused on the selection of research topics, advising students to avoid overly broad titles and ensure that the topic closely aligns with the content of the paper. He suggested that students choose precise, detailed, and practical topics. Professor Li Yingxia praised the students for their research enthusiasm and academic abilities. She encouraged them to broaden their perspectives, engage in more communication and exchanges with teachers and peers, and make full use of the university’s academic resources. She also recommended actively seeking guidance from the faculty.

In the fourth session, students presented on topics such as the Party’s self-revolution, building a shared sense of the Chinese national community, harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, and accelerating the formation of new productive forces. The main reviewers for this session were Professors Liao Chen and Yin Wengui. Professor Liao Chen provided detailed feedback on aspects such as the clarity of the titles, the coherence of the themes, the logical structure of the papers, and the understanding and application of new concepts. He emphasized the need to improve analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as the importance of cultivating a rigorous writing logic to better grasp the central theme of the papers. Professor Yin Wengui offered detailed guidance on the structure and logical flow of the papers. He encouraged students to be bold in innovation and ensure the originality of their academic papers.

The entire session received enthusiastic responses and fostered a positive atmosphere. It not only provided a platform for communication and exchange among the graduate students of the School but also injected new energy into the innovation and development of graduate education. Both faculty and students expressed that the successful hosting of the symposium played a positive role in stimulating academic interest in related research topics, while also fostering a strong academic environment within the School of Marxism. The symposium concluded successfully amidst lively discussions.
