    Letter from the School of Marxism at Shenzhen University to Students Interested in Applying for the 2023 Graduate Program

    Dear Students,

    The annual graduate admissions process is about to begin, and we sincerely hope that aspiring scholars will consider applying for the master's program at the School of Marxism, Shenzhen University. Below is a brief introduction to our school and the relevant admissions policies for this year.

    1. Overview of the School:

    Shenzhen University was established in 1983 with approval from the Ministry of Education. Over its 36-year history, the university has adhered to its motto of "Self-Reliance, Self-Discipline, Self-Improvement," developing its unique identity as a "Special Economic Zone University, Window University, and Experimental University." It has built a complete talent development system, ranging from bachelor's to doctoral degrees, and has become a comprehensive university with a wide range of disciplines, well-equipped facilities, excellent faculty, and standardized management.

    Currently, Shenzhen University has 4,001 staff members, including 2,568 full-time faculty members (602 professors and 751 associate professors), 601 technical staff, and 832 administrative staff. The university hosts 1,426 postdoctoral researchers, 756 full-time research staff, and 99 visiting professors. There are 23 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (9 part-time), and 22 foreign academicians (9 part-time). The university's high-level talent pool includes 3 chief scientists of the National "973 Program," 20 recipients of the National Distinguished Young Scholars Fund, 27 recipients of the National Excellent Young Scholars Fund, and 12 recipients of the Ministry of Education's "New Century Excellent Talents" award.

    The School of Marxism at Shenzhen University serves as a key platform for learning, researching, and promoting Marxism in the Special Economic Zone. In 2003, the school was authorized to offer a master's degree in Marxist Theory and Ideological and Political Education. In 2006, it was further authorized to grant master's degrees in Basic Principles of Marxism and Marxism in China. In 2017, it received approval to offer a first-level master's degree in Marxist Theory. As a direct second-tier teaching and research institution under Shenzhen University, it is one of the disciplines being developed for doctoral programs at Shenzhen University in 2020.

    The School of Marxism at Shenzhen University has 72 faculty and staff members, including 60 full-time teachers, 10 professors, and 18 associate professors. Among them, 54 hold doctoral degrees. The school also has 2 members of the Guangdong Provincial Teaching Steering Committee for Ideological and Political Courses, 4 recipients of Shenzhen’s Pengcheng Peacock Special Positions, 1 Guangdong Provincial Teaching Master, 1 Guangdong Provincial Teaching Master for Ideological and Political Courses, and 2 leading scholars at Shenzhen University.

    The School of Marxism at Shenzhen University, rooted in the Special Economic Zone, is known for its bold innovation and distinctive characteristics. In recent years, the school has fully leveraged Shenzhen’s geographical advantages, being adjacent to Hong Kong and Macau and located at the forefront of reform and opening up. It has successively established eight teaching and research platforms, including the Shenzhen University Institute of Migration Culture, the Shenzhen International Development Strategy Research Center, the Shenzhen University Ideological and Political Theory Course Simulation and Experimental Teaching Center, the Institute of Contemporary Chinese Thought and Culture, the Shenzhen University Institute of Moral Culture, the Shenzhen University Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences, the Shenzhen University Center for Chinese System Philosophy, and the Shenzhen University Deng Xiaoping Theory Research Center. The school also boasts platforms such as the "Guangdong Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center for Ideological and Political Courses," the "Ministry of Education Demonstration School of Marxism," and the "Guangdong Provincial Innovation Team for Ideological and Political Education." It has won five national and provincial teaching achievement awards.

    In the past five years, the school has been approved for over 130 research projects, including 11 projects funded by the National Social Science Fund (general, youth, and late-stage funding) and 33 provincial and ministerial-level projects. The faculty has published more than 80 papers in CSSCI journals, including 1 in Chinese Social Sciences, 4 in Studies on Marxism, and 5 in Ethics Studies. Additionally, the school has published 10 academic monographs and won five Guangdong Provincial Awards for Outstanding Achievements in Philosophy and Social Sciences. Looking ahead, the school will continue to uphold the spirit of reform and innovation, cultivating well-rounded talent to contribute to both the development of the Special Economic Zone and the nation. It will actively support the university's goal of becoming a high-level institution, pursuing growth with quality, and striving to become a leading Marxism school in Guangdong.

    2. Employment of Graduates:

    The School has graduated 16 cohorts of master's students, with 80% of graduates employed in provincial government agencies, universities, state-owned enterprises, and other institutions. Many graduates have been admitted to PhD programs at universities such as Peking University and Sun Yat-sen University, and they have collectively published over 100 papers.

    3. Scholarship and Financial Aid Policies: (Referencing 2022; specific details for 2023 will follow the university’s updated scholarship and aid system)

    According to the university’s regulations, each full-time master's student enrolled in 2022 receives an annual stipend of 8,000 RMB. The university offers academic scholarships, with three tiers for new students: special, first-class, and second-class. The special scholarship provides 15,000 RMB per year, automatically awarded to all students admitted through recommendation, first-choice applicants from first-tier universities, and first-choice applicants from Shenzhen University whose undergraduate performance ranks in the top 20% of their class (excluding students from joint programs). The first-class scholarship offers 10,000 RMB per year, and the second-class scholarship offers 5,000 RMB per year. From the second year onward, academic scholarships are available in two tiers: 10,000 RMB for first-class and 5,000 RMB for second-class. Additionally, the university offers various social (corporate) scholarships, such as the Tencent Scholarship (25,000 RMB per recipient) and the Pengcheng Scholarship (10,000 RMB per recipient).

    5. Each of the above specializations accepts master's students through recommendation and exemption from the entrance exam.

    6. Friendly Reminder: The School of Marxism at Shenzhen University will not accept applicants with equivalent academic qualifications for the 2023 admissions.
